In the poem " In Vain" Jack Kerouac expresses his opinion of the value of these things. For instance " The stars in the sky/In Vain". the word Vain basically means producing no result or useless, in which we know that the stars are very much important. However, the poet uses sarcasm to get his point of view across, which is that all these objects are simply being taken for granted. Things like "The tragedy of Hamlet", " sleeping mother", "Aztec empire", " The life of Buddha" etc. These things all had a huge impact on history and our society today in which the poet feels that we do not value them.
Literary Devices
In the poem "In Vain" there are many literary devices such as personification. For example the poem states" the stars in the sky/ In vain" this is a form of personification because the poets gives the stars human characteristics such has being in vain.
