In the poem "a song in the front yard" Gwendolyn Brooks expresses her feelings about how she feels. The poem is about her wanting to go out on her own and experience life with all the good and even some of the bad. In the text she states"I’ve stayed in the front yard all my life/I want a peek at the back
Where/ it’s rough and untended and hungry weed grows/
A girl gets sick of a rose." From this quote you can infer that she is experiencing a sense of tedious and longs for something new."I want to go in the back yard now/ And maybe down the alley,/ To where the charity children play/ I want a good time today." She basically talks about how she wants some adventure in her life. The "Back yard" resembles life and its circuitous patterns."They do some wonderful things/They have some wonderful fun/ My mother sneers, but I say it’s fine/How they don’t have to go in at quarter to nine/My mother, she tells me that Johnnie Mae/Will grow up to be a bad woman/That George’ll be taken to Jail soon or late/(On account of last winter he sold our back gate)."

Literary Devices
In the poem "a song in the front yard" there are many literary devices such as anthropomorphism. An example of this in the poem is ''Where it`s rough and untended and hungry weed grows." This is an example because in this quote there is a human quality like emotion or feeling beings given to a non-human object. Also another example is euphemism. An example of this in the poem is "And I`d like to be a bad woman, too,/And wear the brave stockings of night-black lace/ And strut down the streets with paint on my face."This is an example of euphemism because this quote substitutes unpleasant or severe words with more genteel ones in order to mash the hardness this device is usually used when writing about matters of sex, violence, and death. However, in this case the matter is sex and this quote means that she wants to dress up, put make up on her face, go out and sell her body for money.
